Speech and Language

Hi, my name is Nicola Blundell and I am a Speech and Language Therapist who works with children at Riverside school. I work here on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  I can work with children who need help with a wide range of needs, some of which include;

  • Saying the right speech sounds
  • Understanding instructions
  • Learning and remembering new words
  • Understanding and answering ‘wh’ questions such as ‘who’, ‘where’ and ‘when questions
  • Attention and listening
  • Putting pictures in the right order to tell a story
  • Putting pictures into groups e.g. apples and crisps are types of food
  • Stammering

I can see children on their own, in small groups or sometimes I work with the whole class. Sometimes I will design a programme of work for your child to do and it will be run by my Speech and Language Therapy Assistants. I am very lucky to have two fantastic assistants who are SEND TAs as well. They are called Mrs Ide and Mrs Wilson.

We tell the classroom staff what we are working on with your child so they can continue to practise what we are working on in class.  I work closely with Helen Dyer (Family Support Advisor), Heidi Lee (Learning mentor), the SEND team and any other professional who may be involved e.g. Educational Psychologists.

If you would like to chat to me you can arrange a meeting by speaking to the class teacher or speaking to reception.

Before children start in the nursery you will be given a nursery natter pack with lots of ideas/games to develop their language skills. When children start in nursery they are all screened by myself or my assistants. This screen has fun activities and lasts about 10-15 minutes which children enjoy doing.  Children who start in our foundation are also screened. This screen shows us if they need any help with their: speech sounds , following longer instructions, speaking in sentences,  putting pictures in the right order to tell a story, position words (e.g. under) and size words (e.g. small). They may need some help from myself 1:1 or they may need a little ‘boost’ of their skills in a group. We will write a letter to let you know if your child needs any help and ideas of games you can play at home to help them.  The group activities are made by me and the groups are run by Mrs Ide and Mrs Wilson with children from nursery or foundation.  When children move into foundation you will be given a Foundation Fun pack with the next stage of language games and ideas.

I sometimes run workshops for different age groups, if there is any workshop you would like me to run please let your child’s class teacher or reception know.
