Design and Technology
Design and Technology
Vision
Through the teaching of Design and Technology at Riverside School, our pupils will develop skills and knowledge which will enable them to approach problem solving in a systematic and methodical way.
We believe a vital part of our work is to encourage all children to have the belief in themselves and their own creativity so that they have the confidence to investigate, design, create, and evaluate exciting and innovative products to impact positively on their own lives and also, potentially, the lives of others.
Also, through the cooking and nutrition elements of Design and Technology, we will teach them the importance of healthy food and how to cook it, giving them a wide range of practical and vitally important life skills.
To achieve all of this, the children will not only learn to apply the skills, knowledge and processes they acquire from Design and Technology lessons but will also be able to draw on aspects of the skills and knowledge of other disciplines such as art, maths, science and PSHE.

Geography
Geography
Vision
‘The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.’
Barack Obama
Geography is by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of the world in which we live. We seek to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
We want children to not fear the unknown but to embrace it.
We will provide experiences for children that will captivate them, motivate them and drive their desire to explore beyond the classroom and their own front door. In every sense, to broaden their horizon.
We want children to know that the ‘The World is their Oyster’ and to give them the confidence to go out and look for the wonders that can be found, out there, in every part of our amazing planet, and to begin to understand them.
-
History
History
Vision
Through the teaching of History at Riverside, we aim to spark the children’s fascination about a much wider world than their own. Whenever possible, we will provide trips, artefacts and visitors, to make our history teaching come to life!
By looking at eras across different parts of the globe, children will be encouraged to ask questions about not only what was happening, but why people, places and ideas change. Alongside understanding what has shaped today, they will realise that their actions can shape the future.
We believe that History, taught well, encourages children to question ideas, articulate their opinions and drives them to find out more: all useful skills for later life. All of our children will begin to acquire those skills as they journey through our school.
-
Mathematics
Mathematics
Vision
At Riverside Community Primary School, we aim to ignite and inspire in all our children a love of Mathematics that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
We believe that Maths is one of the most important and interesting subjects in the curriculum and we want every child to become fascinated and absorbed by it, keen to master it at their own level of understanding and achieve their highest possible goals.
As a result, our children’s ability in Mathematics will give them confidence and prepare them extremely well for using maths skills in their everyday lives, now and in the future, and in employment in later life.

Modern Languages
Modern Languages
Vision
Here at Riverside, we will awaken in all of our children, a love for learning languages that will last them a lifetime.
Children will develop skills that will be transferable to learning other languages in the future. By using numerous, creative approaches to language learning, we will nurture a developing sense of curiosity around how languages work, as well as foster a desire to travel to and learn about places that are away from home.
At Riverside we are lucky to have members of our school community from countries outside of the UK. We aim to give those children (and adults) a space to share their culture with their classmates and to use their experiences and knowledge to support the exploration of our world. We will do our very best to spark curiosity and interest in the wider world (past, present and future). Together we will develop a sense of empathy for others, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, questioning prejudices as we go.
We are living in an age where we don’t know what our future will look like, but by fostering a love of languages and a genuine curiosity and a growing knowledge about the wider world, Riverside pupils will feel confident that they can go anywhere they wish to go and wherever the wind takes them; they will be true citizens of the world.

Music
Music
Vision
At Riverside Primary School, our Vision for Music is that we will nurture a love of music, teach every child that anybody can create music and show them that they will have their lives enriched by it.
We believe that we are all born with the same capacity for developing musically and we will do everything we can to draw music out of children, making them aware of their musical instincts whilst teaching them essential musical skills and knowledge.
To do this, we will provide them with some truly memorable musical experiences with a wide range of musical outcomes and encourage all children to take part fully in the musical life of the school, one way or another!
We really want children to leave our school knowing that music can be a joyful and wonderful part of life and hope that this will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Physical Education
Physical Education
Vision
At Riverside Primary School, our aim is for every child to leave us with the basic knowledge and skills they will need to become active, healthy individuals.
During the time at this school, we will lay the foundations, block by block, on which our pupils can build lasting and meaningful, healthy and active lifestyles.
We will create a positive ‘have a go’ attitude within P.E. lessons, ensuring they are enjoyable, engaging and include every child, enabling every one of them to participate fully to the best of their abilities. Our P.E. lessons will also aim to inspire children to find at least one sport, discipline or activity that they are passionate about and will want to pursue in a spirit of fair-play and honest sportsmanship beyond the school.
As well as teaching the importance of exercising and regular activity, we will endeavour to promote both physical and mental wellbeing whilst having fun.
-
PSHE
PSHE
Vision
At Riverside, we believe that nurturing happy and healthy children is essential to all aspects of their learning, development, physical and mental wellbeing and we intend to give the children the practical skills to live a happy, healthy and safe life.
PSHE at our school will encourage every pupil to feel empowered to have a voice which will enable them to make informed choices, be able to communicate how they feel and give them the skills to solve challenging situations.
All children in our school will be kind, respectful and empathetic to others so they can thrive as individual members of the school, local and global community.
Most importantly we want all of the children at Riverside to have high aspirations, to know they can achieve almost anything in life and to feel proud and successful of their achievements.

Religious Studies
Religious Studies
Vision
“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they all have learned to live together in the same box.”
Robert Fulghum
Through the RE curriculum at Riverside, we will strive to equip our pupils to become tolerant, resilient and respectful world citizens for the future. By challenging pre-existing ideas we will enable our children to consider and question the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs, issues of right and wrong and what it ultimately means to be human.
In this way our pupils will leave Riverside being able to respect others, offer informed responses and challenge prejudice in the wider world.
And, just like those crayons, they will have learnt a lot about living together, happily and peacefully, in the same “box”.
-
Science
Science
Vision
At Riverside, we aim to spark the curiosity and interest of our children through fun and inspiring, practical, hands-on lessons.
Our children will suggest, explore, test out ideas, reach conclusions and, by doing so, gain an excellent grounding in key scientific concepts and ideas. All of this will boost their scientific thinking, enabling them to acquire skills and knowledge that are vital in a rapidly and ever-changing world and will equip them well for later life.
We will do everything we can to make science accessible to all, encouraging every child to become an enthusiastic, young scientist.

Literacy
Literacy
Vision
In every lesson and in every room, nook and cranny of Riverside Primary School, a hum of learning can be heard: sometimes, it’s the loud buzz of happy children, excitedly learning and working together; other times, it’s the quiet purr of contented children who are completely absorbed in their own, independent learning. Conducting these classrooms choirs are the exceptional Teachers and Teaching Assistants who inspire, nurture and challenge, all of our pupils, all day, every day; teachers who make every lesson so enthralling, our learners want to hear more, practise more, learn more; teachers who create safe yet wonderfully stimulating learning environments, in which children, confident and motivated, will sing their own songs as they journey through their years at our school.
